Twenty-one years ago, an amazing bridge was built in Japan, linking several islands to mainland Japan at Sakaide City. Officials from Sakaide came to Sausalito in 1988 and placed a plaque at the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, acknowledging the similarities between their feat and our beautiful bridge.
At that time, a strong relationship was forged between Sakaide and Sausalito. Subsequently, over the years we have sent many student delegations to Sakaide, and students from Sakaide have come to Sausalito. In this cultural exchange, students stay with local families, learn local customs, and participate in educational, cultural and entertaining activities.
In 2009, ten students from Marin county will be visiting
Sakaide from July 24th to August 4th. The students will be living in the homes of “host families” in and around Sakaide and participating in a wide variety of cultural events to learn about life in Japan.
Next year it will be Sakaide’s turn to send a delegation from Japan to experience life in the United States by life in the United States.
Each year, long-term and loving relationships have been established between the students and families. they came to us to study the Golden Gate Bridge. This relationship has been a strong one ever since.
We have sent many student delegations as part of the cultural exchange program and we have celebrated large commerative milestones, such as this year in 2009 which commences our 21st anniversary.
